Starlight Cinema 2006 - V for Vendetta at Sentul Park

Wednesday, August 09, 2006
There were several ways I could've spent today as it was my bro's birthday and it wouldn't have him involved in any of it.

1. Keane's concert in Bangkok
2. V for Vendetta at Starlight Cinema

3. Something else altogether

Not too sure why mum took leave today, but I suspect Gran might have something to do with it.

Instead of travelling to Thailand, AND I couldn't get anyone to go with to Sentul in the end, I left the house at about 6 something, tried not to ding or crash the car driving down to Jalan Sentul like a mad woman and I redeemed the free pass a few minutes before 7 p.m. (Thing was redeeming the tickets before 7 p.m. so they know who paid and who were the cheapskates). The girl that manned the free pass redemption counter was someone I used to see around in HELP, but I don't know her personally. However, she recognised me as being from HELP and we exchanged some pleasantries before going in. (There was a crowd, so not much to say).

I parked the mat (and my butt) and fought the urge not to fall asleep waiting for it to begin. Killed the time by staring at the blue sky (really! It has been years since I've done that) and being plugged in to me iPod. It was also nice to have the mat all to myself; it was a little hilarious to see a group of four on one small mat, they're better off watching it somewhere else. There were also people who brought bean bags and folding chairs, but of course they were at the back. To my mercy the show started at 7.50 p.m.

During the first half of the movie, the urge to pee was growing strong, but as the movie plot went on the urge almost went away, which is always a good sign of a good movie. I dare say Hugo Weaving damn lucky lah, he plays a guy no one has seen the face of for the ENTIRE movie. Heck, like that he could get someone else to do the work and he'd just recite the lines. But come on...?! I'm just kidding. Natalie Portman wasn't bad either (then again I'm biased), I'm just glad that it's her and not Scarlett Johansson or someone else.

I know I've wanted to watch this ever since it came out in the States but couldn't, and the motivation to watch it became greater recently cos I wanted to see Stephen Fry in his supporting role as Gordon Dietrich, a closet homosexual TV personality. (Yeah I know, a gay dude playing a gay dude - how original right?) I was a little sad that he died, but at the end of the movie when everyone in London unmasked themselves, the "dead" were among them. My only thought was, "What the?!"

Overall, I liked it. I can't find anything wrong with it. I seriously do - I'm adding this to my list of favourite movies and potential DVDs to own. (Maybe I like it cos it's so deep with meaning that is beyond my comprehension and is over my head, I don't know).

And I'm glad that the weather's also really good - no rain. And the full moon in the sky illuminates the area really well.

Here's one variation of the Bonfire Prayer that I got here.
Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot ;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'Twas his intent.
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
Three score barrels of powder below.
Poor old England to overthrow.
By God's providence he was catch'd,
With a dark lantern and burning match
Holloa boys, Holloa boys, let the bells ring
Holloa boys, Holloa boys, God save the King!
Hip hip Hoorah !
Hip hip Hoorah !
A penny loaf to feed ol'Pope,
A farthing cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down,
A faggot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar,'
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head,
Then we'll say: ol'Pope is dead.
Here's one of the funnier lines in the movie, as uttered by Dietrich (from here):

Gordon Deitrich
: I am V. At last you know the truth. You're stunned, I know. It's hard to believe, isn't it, that beneath this wrinkled, well-fed exterior there lies a dangerous killing machine with a fetish for Fawkesian masks. Vive la revolution!
Evey Hammond
: That is not funny, Gordon.
