A Wet Experience at Nokia Starlight Cinema

Friday, July 15, 2005
Okaylah, finally checked out the Nokia Starlight Cinema at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith with Ivan (who has already seen it twice). Left the house at about 5.45 p.m. to have dinner before going on to Bukit Kiara. But not without a brolly and Mum's mat cos it looked like it's gonna rain. Dinner was roti planta and teh ais in SS2's Kayu Nasi Kandar. Ivan, who was driving and claims to have a bad sense of direction, decided to leave soon after in case of bad traffic and if we got lost en route.

Good news is we DIDN'T get lost and we were early. Super early. 6 something early. So we managed to get good parking as well (yay) not too far from the area (which was also an area for the horses). So after leaving our particulars with them and getting the back of our hands stamped (bright red "Starlight Cinema"), we checked out what was in the place. Several white (major sponsor) booths - Nokia, EMI Music, Suzuki, Citibank, Chachos, TGI Fridays, and Heineken, among others. There were a couple of huge Gorillaz and Coldplay posters (with their label being EMI and their albums recently released, etc). Temptation to flick the 10-20 ft Coldplay one was enormous, but it'd be too conspicuous. (It was either carry the whole thing, frame and all; or to cut the thing off the frame, roll it up and go).

Turns out Ivan knows some of the guys manning the TGI Friday booth (he used to work there), who are from the 1U branch. Since there's no action inside, we sat outside along the pavement and talked crap like we usually do while the bugger smoked. While sitting there we were also watching horses trotting about and also what everyone else walking in was carrying - pillows, brollies, fast food, mats, blankets - you name it, someone's carrying it. After sitting outside for a time, went back in to get a spot in front of the big inflatable screen as there were already people claiming their spots. Of course I also didn't expect to see Chiam and Qian (my coursemates, whom until recently I didn't know that they're dating) who brought 4 pieces of kain lap kaki to sit on with no brolly. (Funny how we didn't see them walk in while we were sitting outside).

Food there (as usual with these events) was blardy expensive, esp. the TGI Friday's food. RM4 for the 2x2x2 inch square of cake, RM12 for 10 sticks of satay, burgers for over RM10, etc etc. Chachos for RM3 (normally less than RM2) and not to mention specially-marked bottled water also going for RM3 (with RM1 going to charity).

Then it rained. It started to pour about 7 p.m. Luckily we brought our brollies were sitting on Mum's mat. Should've brought stools to sit on. Ivan, being the nice guy that he is, saw that Chiam and Qian (who he met for the first time last night) were without brollies and were getting soaked and offered his and went back to his car to get them. I was trying to keep myself and the mat dry.

While impatiently waiting for the movie to start - it was still raining at this point - there were loads of annoucements made, one being that they would reimburse paid tickets for tomorrow night because of the weather. There was also a short contest where the emcee would ask 2 questions and the person who runs up to her and answers said question correctly wins something (I suspect is a mini flask, based on the size of the box). One woman that ran up only came up with 3/4 of the answer (to "who are the leading actors in Mr and Mrs Smith) - Brad Pitt and Angelina ___. Suspect that the woman only knows Brad Pitt. Would try my luck, but it was (still) raining and I was lazy to run so far when there are people nearer to the emcee than me.

Because there was nothing else to do in between all that we were also busy admiring people's umbrellas (there were nice ones, mah) and people-watching. There was a guy in front who was sleeping in his sleeping bag, not caring that rain in dripping on his face. Since there was also a girl with him, suspect that he might be getting a BJ under the sleeping bag, haha.

As usual, there was the numerous commercials of the event sponsors.Thought it was amusing that they showedImage hosted by Photobucket.com only Brad's Heineken ad and not Jen's (haha - being sarcastic here, people). So the damn movie was finally underway shortly before 9 p.m. (finally!) and it finished about 11 something. Good thing it stopped raining around 9.30 p.m. and was able to watch the rest of the show without umbrellas. Could've also laid on the mat if it didn't just rain and it was wet where there was no one sitting on it and if one of us brought another mat to stretch out on. Oh well.

I don't have the adjectives to describe how I feel about the movie. I mean, while there's no actual plot, I don't really mind it lah (pasal ticket free kan...). People behind us were laughing their heads off at Brad Pitt in scenes which I didn't think was funny. Of course there was also Adam Brody (the geek in The O.C.) who was the target they were both sent to kill, and he's no different here than in The O.C. I was wondering what's he doing in this movie. I thought the show was only oh-kay at best. Not something I would otherwise pay for.

Left Bukit Kiara with soggy asses and went to the SS2 mamak (which I've not been to before) cos we were both hungry and thirsty (food there damn expensive leh). And also ran into schoolmates from the alma mater. But not before stopping to pick someone up cos friend Ivan's got other plans despite the late hour. So was home a little after midnight.

Bad weather aside, it was a good experience.
